I’m gonna think out loud and drop one of my terrible takes again:

I feel like there’s this strange of fear of making a sincere catgirl character. They’re either an anime parody or treated as sub-human in-universe; in an attempt to do some kind of weird deconstruction/subversion.

I really like Katya's design; I get some cartoony vibes from it that are just really endearing to me

Thank you! The gloves and mostly black and white color scheme is intentional. It took a while to find a concrete look for her.
